SEMRush announced a new feature in their organic analysis tools. Why? Because most SEOs know that you can capitalize on searchers interest if you know their intent. It can make our campaigns much more efficient and we won’t have to spend forever finding discovery queries or making spreadsheets. Thanks, SEMRush!
While I don’t think SEMRush is the end-all solution for SEO magic, it does offer a unique set of eyes into your domain and is the only tool out there right now that can measure some sort of intent just based on the ask of each keyword. I primarily use the keyword overview and organic research tab to do most of my heavy lifting, but you can find the keyword intent metric in all of the following tools on SEMRush:
- Domain Overview
- Organic Research
- Keyword Overview
- Position Tracking
- Keyword Gap
- Keyword Magic
- Keyword Manager

The intent tool allows us to classify our keywords into four categories:
Informational – looking for answers to general questions
Navigational – looking to find a specific site
Commercial – looking to research on specific products/brands
Transactional – searchers who intend to make a purchase
Obviously, we would love to target transactional keywords, but why is it important to target other keywords, too? Well, brand awareness for one, but also, intent refers to the purpose of that person’s search query. If we can target our content to match a searcher’s intent (whether transactional or informational), we can most definitely get them to stay on our site if we have the product or service they are looking for.
